Talbina is a nutritious food made from barley flour and liquid, typically water or milk. It has a long history in Islamic tradition and is mentioned in various Hadiths (sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad) as a remedy for various ailments and a source of comfort for the sick and grieving. The name "Talbina" is derived from the Arabic word "Laban," which means milk.
Preparation:
To prepare talbina, 1-2 tablespoons of 100% wholegrain barley flour are mixed with one and a half cups of water or milk. The mixture is then heated over low heat for 10-15 minutes until it thickens to the desired consistency. Honey, spices, or other flavorings can be added for taste.
A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) used to recommend Talbina for the sick and those grieving over a deceased person. She would often say, "I heard the Messenger (Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam) saying, 'Talbina gives rest to the heart of the patient, makes it active, and relieves some of their sorrow and grief'" (Saheeh al-Bukhaari 5325).
Additionally, A'ishah mentioned that when her relatives would gather after a death, she would order the preparation of a pot of Talbina. The dish, Tharid (a mixture of meat and bread), would be prepared, and the Talbina would be poured over it. A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) would tell the women present, "Eat from it, for I heard the Messenger (Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam) saying, 'Talbina soothes the heart of the patient and relieves them from some of their sadness'" (Saheeh al-Bukhaari 5058).
However, it is noteworthy that A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) also mentioned that although Talbina is beneficial, it is not always liked by the patient (Saheeh al-Bukhaari 5326).
The Prophet (Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam) encouraged the consumption of things that might not be particularly liked but are beneficial. He emphasized the advantages of Talbina, stating that it cleans the stomach just as dirt is cleaned from the face with water (Mustadrak of Haakim 7455).
The nutritional benefits of Talbina have been highlighted in the Hadith. It is prepared by mixing 1-2 tablespoons of 100% wholegrain barley flour with one and a half cups of water or milk. The mixture is then heated on low for 10-15 minutes. The consistency can be adjusted by varying the amount of flour used, making it as thick as porridge or as thin as soup.
Talbina Porridge is suitable for a variety of individuals, such as diabetics, hypertension or heart disease patients, stroke survivors, individuals with chronic pain or arthritis, and those with digestive disorders. It can also be served to children and to individuals who are very sick and their close relatives. It is a versatile and valuable food, rich in both tradition and health benefits.
