In preparation for the holy month of Ramadan, the Deputy Emir of the Makkah Region, Prince Saud bin Mishal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, conducted an inspection of the ongoing Mataf expansion project at the Grand Mosque in Makkah. His visit aimed to assess the project's readiness to accommodate the influx of pilgrims expected during this spiritually significant period.

During his tour, Prince Saud bin Mishal reviewed the progress of several critical developments within the Mataf area, ensuring that all improvements align with the broader goal of enhancing the pilgrim experience. Among the aspects inspected were:

  • Developed Facades: The updated facades contribute to both the structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of the Mataf.
  • Cantilever and Fascia Enhancements: These architectural elements are designed to support the overall structure while maintaining the historic beauty of the Grand Mosque.
  • Handrail for the Second Floor: Safety improvements, including the installation of a sturdy and well-designed handrail, aim to facilitate smooth movement for pilgrims.
  • Permanent Cantilever Lighting: New lighting installations ensure that the Mataf remains well-illuminated, providing a serene and safe environment for worshippers, especially during the night prayers of Ramadan.
  • Minarets Development: The minarets, an iconic feature of the Grand Mosque, are undergoing enhancements to preserve their grandeur while ensuring their structural soundness.

The Mataf expansion project is a crucial component of Saudi Arabia's efforts to improve pilgrimage infrastructure and accommodate the increasing number of worshippers. Covering a total area of 12,350 square meters, the expansion significantly enhances the capacity of the circumambulation area.

Previously, the Mataf could accommodate 97,000 pilgrims per hour, but with the recent upgrades, this number has now risen to 107,000 pilgrims per hour an increase of 10,000 pilgrims. This expansion will help manage the massive crowds that gather for Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba), particularly during peak seasons like Ramadan and Hajj.

Commitment to Enhancing the Pilgrim Experience

Prince Saud bin Mishal's visit highlights the Saudi leadership’s unwavering commitment to ensuring a seamless and spiritually enriching experience for the millions of Muslims who visit the Grand Mosque annually. By investing in state-of-the-art infrastructure and modern facilities, the Kingdom aims to uphold its role as the custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and provide world-class services to pilgrims from around the world.

As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, these improvements will undoubtedly contribute to a safer, more comfortable, and more fulfilling spiritual journey for all worshippers visiting the Grand Mosque in Makkah.
