SHEIKH ABDUL BASIT ABDUS SAMAD
Sheikh Abdul Basit Abdul Samad is an Egyptian Qur’an reciter (1927-1988) arguably has been the most popular Qari (Reciter) in the world.
Sheikh Abdul Basit started learning Qur’an recitation and memorization at the age of 8 and learn the entire Holy Qur’an by heart at the age of 10.
He went on to become known for his recitation styles not only in Egypt but around the Islamic World and beyond.
It is said that many people, even non-Muslims, including World leaders such as Indira Gunchi, an Indian prime minister and political leader, were touched by his recitation.
Sheikh Abdul Basit was regarded as one of the best reciters of the Qur’an in the world, he was an Egyptian Qari, Sheikh and Imam.
He has won three world Qira’at competitions in the early 1970’s. He was one of the first huffaz (Memorizers) to make commercial recording of his recitation and the first President of “Reciters Union” in Egypt.
At 10 years Sheikh Abdul Basit finished learning the Qur’an by heart in his village. He also learned 7 styles of Qur’an recitation by the age of 12 and 10 styles by the age of 14. His rise to fame in World soon took place across the Muslim World.
He gained the reputation of being called the “Golden Throat” and the “Voice of Heaven” due to his melodious styles, remarkable breath control and unique tone bin which the listener is able to feel the words being recited. His legacy remains unmatched in Muslim world, as Quran Reciters attempt to imitate his unique styles.
He died of an illness due to an accident most sources claim he died in a car crash which is been disapproved.
But Sheikh Abdul Basit dies of liver cancer at the age of 61 in 1988.
