As the blessed month of Ramadan 1446 approaches, the anticipation for the sighting of the crescent moon grows among Muslims worldwide. According to astronomical calculations and Islamic traditions, the crescent for Ramadan 1446 will be searched for on Friday, 28 February 2025, which corresponds to 29 Sha’ban 1446 in the Islamic calendar.
The Islamic calendar is lunar-based, meaning the beginning of each month is determined by the sighting of the new moon. Ramadan, the holiest month in Islam, starts once the crescent moon is sighted, marking the beginning of fasting from dawn to sunset for the next 29 or 30 days.
Who Conducts the Moon Sighting?
- Islamic Scholars & Committees: Official moon sighting committees in various countries, led by scholars and astronomers, observe the sky for the crescent.
- General Public Participation: In some regions, people are encouraged to look for the crescent and report sightings to local authorities.
What Happens After the Moon is Sighted?
- If the crescent is sighted, Ramadan begins the next day (Saturday, 1 March 2025).
- If the crescent is not sighted, Sha’ban will complete 30 days, and Ramadan will begin on Sunday, 2 March 2025.
